Animal uplift is the act of increasing the cognitive abilities of non-human animals through technological means. This is a recurrent trope in speculative fiction since 'The Island of Dr. Moreau', but recent advances in genetic engineering and biotechnology make it feasible in the near future.
My interest in the domain dates from 2009 and a discussion on FranceFurs about scientifically plausible means to obtain human-animal hybrids from the human population. I wanted to explore the opposite angle starting from animals and discovered the concept of animal uplift. I then read 'The Island of Dr. Moreau' for the first time and decided to design a better uplift protocol than the one used by the titular doctor. Not difficult frankly, since the novel is an anti-vivisection pamphlet.
Using the access to science periodicals granted by my university, I started a bibliographical research on the subject. I found that the basic building blocks for a feasible uplift protocol were present or emerging, just not coalesced into a coherent ensemble. This spurned to write and talk about uplift to a larger audience, although mainly constituted of furries and transhumanists (sometimes combined as with the Freedom of Form Foundation).

Mon intérêt dans le domaine date de 2009 et d'une discussion sur le forum FranceFurs à propos de moyens scientifiquement plausibles d'obtenier des hybrides humains-animaux à partir de la population humaine. J'ai voulu explorer l'angle opposé en partant des animals et alors découvert le concept d'animal uplift. J'ai ensuite lu 'L'île du Dr. Moreau' pour la première fois et decidé de concevoir un meilleur protocole d'uplift que celui employé dans le roman. Ce n'est pas françement difficile, puisque le roman est un pamphlet anti-vivisection .
Utilisant l'accès aux journaux scientifiques permis par mon université, J'ai commençé une recherche bibliographique sur le sujet. J'ai découvert que les éléments de base pour l'uplift existent déjà ou sont en train d'emerger, ils ne sont juste pas encore assemblés en un protocole cohérent. Cela m'a poussé à écrire et parler sur l'uplift à une plus large audience, même si elle était principalement constituée de furries et de transhumanistes (quelquefois combiné comme pour la Freedom of Form Foundation).
